I'm sure we've all heard of the concept of six degrees of separation- that we are all six "steps" or people away from everyone else on Earth. In other words, we're all connected. In That Devil's No Friend of Mine by J.D. Mason, the death of Bishop Fontaine, a successful, yet very uptight mortician, leaves several folks in his life lost and wanting. The one thing they have in common is Bishop.
Kristine, Bishop's daughter, has been so sheltered that she is happy about not having to endure the long shadow that her father cast in her life, even as she mourns his passing. Business partner Lamar no longer has to be concerned about Bishop's judgemental attitude. Cole, a distant relative, looked up to Bishop and respected his wisdom; Rayne, a widow, needed his support to stay clean; and Rhonda, Lamar's wife, felt that Bishop was the one thing standing between Lamar and his true desires. What you have left is the story of what happens when Bishop is no longer present to influence these people's lives.
That Devil is entertaining, but I kept waiting for the "big reveal" about Bishop. Something to make us see that he was not the man that any of these characters thought he was. I thought that Bishop would be the sixth main character, but he was more like a side note. We learn a lot about Bishop's actions, but nothing about his motivation. Mason makes up for that by giving us interesting story lines to follow with the other five, although Cole plays out his drama in relative isolation from the others. You almost forget that there's more to know about Bishop, but not quite.
