The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe

The Physick Book of Deliverance DaneI love witches. The thought of being able to command the elements, healing folks, and knowing the future seem like fun and exciting abilities to have. Witches kick butt and take names, so I was totally on board when a buddy of mine suggested that I read The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe. She loved it and she thought it would be right up my alley.

And it kind of, sort of, was.

The Physick Book … is part historical fiction, part modern day mystery. Howe gives the reader a fictionalized account of the Salem Witch Trials and the drama that surrounds Deliverance Dane, a known “witch” in Salem. She counterbalances Deliverance’s story with the tale of her modern descendant, Connie, a Ph.D. candidate who stumbles upon her family legacy. Connie ends up living in her grandmother’s house because of her absentminded mother, and through lots of research, and a little help from her friends, she unravels the mystery that is her family.

Of course, there is a love interest.

Of course, there is a bad guy.

There was so much potential in this book. I was ready to be all in and enjoy the witchy happenings. Except, there weren’t a lot of witchy happenings. Or at least, not as much as I thought there would be. While Howe hooked me with the premise, the middle of the book was a bit slow for my tastes. By the time Connie got to the gist of the matter, I was just ready for it to be over. And while the ending went a little better than I had anticipated, I was still left feeling a bit ambivalent about the whole thing.

If research and historic archives is your thing, then this is the book for you. Be prepared for great story elements, a lag in the middle, and an ending that wraps things up, but may kind of make you wish for a little more umph.
